the urge is huge...

to abbreviate. as i see it - there are 2 types of essays, one with word limits, and the other with page limits. this discussion will revolve around the latter. in essays with page limits, i am faced with a big inclination to abbreviate words, management to mgmt, marketing to mktg, technology to tech, and to & ... you get the flow ?
i haven't abbreviated anything yet for sake of professionalism, but if i do, i think i will have a ton of space to fit in more crap - so maybe i will let it be as it is ? what do y'all say ?

I would say, DO NOT!

You are better off condensing your essay than risking coming off less than professional.

Remember the quote of pointy-haired boss of Dilbert "Anything can be cut by 10% without affecting the end result!"

Stay away from abbreviations. Keep in mind that the folks reading your files at the top schools are often former English majors carrying degrees in education, etc. In other words, they live for scoffing at these types of short-cuts (since business people are often notorious for their poor writing skills). In fact, when I was on Wharton's admissions team, we used to have a good laugh at the applicants who used bullet points mid-essay! It was as though they just couldn't break out of Powerpoint mode...

Yeah - I agree with all of the above. Play with the margins gently and maybe font sizes :)

Resist the urge. You don't want to seem unprofessional.
