There has to be something wrong

...with me, that is. Or should I say, with my bschool applications.

I got WLed by Kellogg again, second year running. This, after I thought that if my previous application was WL worthy, this one was for sure worthy of an admit plus a scholarship. Ok, little exaggeration :-)

I had been kaput for the last two weeks(visiting my family), with very little access to the internet. So when I got back home today and checked my email, the Kellogg Status check email scared me a little. I had been kind of anticipating not so good news since quite a few admits were informed before Christmas itself, but a check-your-status-email is never very good. But although I had not expected, WL it is for now.

I probably didnt work on my Kellogg WL well enough last year, and I guess I dont know everything I should. So if any of you have any suggestions, please write in the comments box or email me at forrestgump47 at gmail dot com. If you could connect me to someone who moved from a WL to an admit, that would be even better.

For now, I will have a bowl full of cornflakes, and doze off to sleep - the flight journey wasnt comfortable at all !

Happy New Year to one and all !!

PS : for those eager to know, this Kellogg result *almost* ends my 07 application cycle. I am not waiting to hear from any other school, and I have not applied to any school in R2 . Reasons on why I behaved so overconfidently are beyond the scope of this blog, primarily because I believe they are silly excuses.

Ugh, thats hard but hang in there. The unofficial word is that there is an increase in b-school apps this year (seems to be true every year now) and so many schools are managing that through waitlists. You have been waitlisted at Chicago and Kellogg (2 top programs) so that points to the strengths in your app. All the best for converting these W/Ls to admits.

Looks like a lot of ppl in the Chicago R1 wait list get admitted after R2 results. So there is still reason to hope for a positive news.

Good luck.

sorry to hear that.
What other schools did you applied this year?

to put it very bluntly, schools r getting over-ambitious this year. a waitlist means they want u but that they are waiting to see if they get "better" applicants in R2 or later on. once they see all the duds they'll come knocking on ur door :-|

I would suggest go to Chicago and visit both Kellogg and GSB. Write them an email confirming your interest. Talk to more students/alums and try to get them to write letters of support for you. If you remember who gave you feedback last year, you should get in touch with him/her as well.

Importantly, dont stress, but do try to get an application or two in during second round as well. I am pretty confident that you will convert either or both of these waitlists into offers, but why take chances.

Just me two cents.

Sorry to hear that. For all you can do to navigate a waitlist

1. I think sorebrek navigated it last year at Chicago and I guess you can talk to him.

2. Send in a letter of support/ additional recommendation ( I am not sure how this will look )

Again, think of what was missing in your application and communicate that you are making up in that area. Job, GMAT , Extra curriculars.

Just my 2 cents.

Man ... sorry to hear the news. I hope that good news follows soon!

Sorry to hear about your waitlist - i hope you hear good news in a couple months once they start accepting people off of it!! try to remember that getting waitlisted (or dinged) at a business school is really not a reflection of your value at all...i mean, who even knows what goes on in the big black box of admissions?!

best of luck!

Man, that is tough news. I hope they realize what you can add to their school and turn that WL to an admit before long. Best of luck!

Forrest, I'm alive :) You comment inspired me to break my long silence.
It is nothing wrong with you or with any of us (who got rejects or WLs). We all know it's roulette... Frankly speaking, I share the opinion of sudha: some schools got over-ambitious this year, and it is especially disturbing that people say schools turn reapplicant-unfriendly...

MBA Pundit said...

@nat4mba : I am not sure who or where is saying that schools turn re-applicant unfriendly but I dont believe thats true. Specially schools like Chicago and Wharton have admitted a lot of re-applicants in the last 2-3 years that I know of. I think schools evaluate your application in the context of the applicant pool that particular year and the fact that you are a re-applicant doesnt work for or against you.

psst! can u come over to my blog and gimme some advice?

sorry to hear that. Chicago WL looks the most realistic to convert into an Admit. Concur with Jatwarrior - might need to consider going to Chi and write them something. best of luck!

I'll do my best not to vanish but cannot make any promises :)

Thanks for dropping in, buddy. I hope your waitlist clears up for both the places - I know it must be tough, having seen applicants in a similar phase last year.

But kudos to your patience, persistance and introspection (I thought what you wrote down there about what you learned from the app process was just too good).

All the best and hang in there!

Forrest, thank you for your comment in my blog. I believe if you will look back at your past year, you will also find a ton of positive things that happened with you :) Let's leave all troubles behind. I keep my fingers crossed for you.

Sorry to hear about that - waitlists are probably the hardest to deal with - most schools will tell you what they want you to do.

If my memory is correct, when I visited Kellogg, I was told that they like candidates to reach out when they are waitlisted.

Following their instructions seems to be the best bet. Good luck my friend!

Thanks for the wishes Forrest.
I've heard that this year while volumes are up, apparently its not because of more people applying but same number of ppl doing more apps . This was as per the Admissions rep (Rose) at Chicago GSB. So I believe as people accept offers, there would be WL conversions . Best of luck.

I am in the same boat as you, perhaps even worse. I am not even waitlisted this time and it feels awful. But I do wish you the very best.
